Crooking her finger, she laughed when he grasped onto it, trying to wedge it into his mouth.

“I’ll see if there’s a shovel around.” Barrett walked to the door and paused with his hand on the knob. “It’ll take me awhile to get them all disposed of.”

“Want me to help?”

“No.” His gaze focused dispiritedly on the baby. “It’ll be morning before we can travel. You figure out what to do with him.”

She turned back to the baby and it suddenly occurred to her that both his mother and father were gone. “Oh, Barrett, what will we do with him?”

Shaking his head, he opened the door. “I’m out of answers; I have been for the past three days.”
